Boulder County, Colo. - While it is not often talked about, an estimated 5 million older adults experience some sort of abuse, neglect or exploitation in the U.S. every year. As part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Boulder County Area Agency on Aging (AAA), area senior centers, and local agencies invite the community to attend a special event in Longmont on Thursday, June 13, to learn more about how to fight the problem, and to celebrate those who are making a difference for area residents.

What: Spotlighting Elder Abuse Awareness: A discussion with local experts
When: Thursday, June 13, 3-4:30 p.m.
Where: Longmont Senior Center, 910 Longs Peak Ave., Longmont
Registration: To attend, please register by calling 303-651-8411.

The event is an opportunity to raise awareness about elder abuse, and to hear professionals who work daily to respond to this problem. Scheduled to present are:

  • Chris Merkle, Detective, Longmont Police Department
  • Adrian Van Nice, Boulder County Deputy District Attorney
  • Guio Bravo, Boulder County AAA Medicare Counselor
  • Frost Yarnell, Boulder County Adult Protective Services

In addition, awards will be presented to local heroes who have intervened to stop elder abuse in Boulder County.

This event is free and open to the public. Local agencies that support older adults will host the event and promote services and programs that can provide early intervention for vulnerable adults.
If you have questions or would like additional information about the event, contact Erica Corson, Elder Rights Program Manager with the AAA, at 303-441-1170.
